Are mildew prevention or mildew eradication methods available?
Back Various solutions to eradicate mildew odor have been proposed. Here is a sampling from popular plumbing and home improvement blogs:
  • Pour chlorine bleach into the drain and let stand.
  • Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain.
  • Pour a caustic drain unclogging chemical down the drain.
  • Pour a mixture of vinegar and baking soda down the drain.
  • Clean the shower curtain.
  • Run a dehumidifier in the bathroom.
  • Use a different soap, shampoo and conditioner to reduce the proteins in soap scum.
  • Feed a plumber's snake down the drain.
  • Re-tile the wall tiles with clean grout.
  • Install a new bathtub.
  • Leave the bathroom lights on for 15 minutes after each shower to kill mildew with ultraviolet radiation.
  • Swab the pipes with a clothes hanger and cloth.
  • Plug or cover the drain after use.
Beyond costly renovations and the employ of professional plumber or mildew removal services, the vast majority of online remedies have proven entirely innefective at addressing mildew odor.

None effectively or affordably address the intake of mildew spores at their source.
